Short story.
The story of Jessie is a reminder to society of its responsibility to its members, especially those who are most vulnerable. The main aim of the story is to emphasize how neglect is not only the product of the present, but that it carries trauma forward like DNA carries its shortcomings forward. It seems that trauma cannot be stopped by merely finding a culprit and locking a jail door. Trauma needs to be rooted out, and it can only be done through the commitment of a whole community to change its ways and to monitor itself constantly.
The story, all names, characters, and incidents portrayed in this short story are fictitious. No identification with actual persons (living or deceased), places, building, and products is intended or should be inferred.
